  1. I've come to suspect that every civilization believes itself generous, moral, and well-informed; slavery, animal/human sacrifice and ecological disaster notwithstanding. Only a few naysayers like Matt Groening with his "Life in Hell" ever crop up, and they're easily co-opted.

    Step into my parlour, old chap, would you care for some eats, drink, and merriment? For tomorrow we die, or Jesus comes — hey, it's got to be one or the other.

  2. I guess because almost everybody only has their own state for reference, and reexamination of some basic assumptions regarding it requires a little too much worldview-balancing than we like.
